Project Implementation
Action Plan
The Pest Management Transition Project will be making presentations at many industry meetings this winter, including the Washington State Horticulture Association annual meeting. At these meetings the concept of the Transition Project will be presented along with explanations on how to get involved. The principle vehicle for growers or orchard managers to get involved will be through participating in an Implementation Unit (IU). Participation in an Implementation Unit will provide access to small group educational opportunities, sharing experiences with others in the Implementation Unit and a focused planning for transitioning pest control programs to use of new insecticides.
Implementation Units
The primary mechanism for assisting the apple industry transition insect control programs to use of new insecticide technologies will be through the establishment of Implementation Units. The concept of an Implementation Unit comes from the success of the areawide codling moth management project, which helped the apple industry adopt pheromone technologies in the late 1990s. The positive experience of growers and orchard managers in the areawide codling moth management project resulted from understanding how best to use new technology (pheromones), sharing information on successes and failures of practices, and cooperating on the management of codling moth and leafrollers on an area larger than their own orchard.
An Implementation Unit will be comprised of growers and orchard managers who are interested in learning more about new insecticides and how they could best introduce them into their pest control programs and whose orchards are in close proximity though not necessarily contiguous. The number of growers and orchard managers and size of orchards comprising an Implementation Unit will be variable. The advantage of joining an Implementation Unit will be participation in and access to local educational events about new insecticides and focused discussions and planning on how to transition orchard pest control practices to take best advantage of new insecticide technologies.
How to Get Involved
